************************* From 21 October –11 November (not inc Sundays and mattinee performances on Saturday and Thursday), York Theatre Royal will be displaying the artist John Monk’s celebrated piece - "The Reflection" from 12pm-2pm in the main auditorium during the run of Art. Painted in 1991 the picture was a gift by Dasha Shenkman, in memory of her mother Belle Shenkman and was presented to York Art Gallery by the Contemporary Art Society in 2000. The painting shows a framed mirror, in front of which is a green table and a cardboard box is on the table. In the mirror's reflection, you can see windows and a chandelier. It is an interesting painting because the canvas is almost entirely taken up by a mirror and so, as the viewer, you would expect to see yourself, or at least the artist in the reflection, but there is no-one there. We are reminded that it is not a real mirror. John Monks was born in Manchester in 1954. He is known for his heavily impastoed (thickly painted) interiors and still lifes. **************************
