************************* The Summer Theatre School, which runs from the 7-19 August at York Theatre Royal and is lottery funded by Arts Council England’s Grants for the Arts programme, is dedicated to creating new work that offers innovative and challenging access routes to mainstream theatre. It is a unique opportunity for young people to work in a fully professional theatre and it really makes a difference to people’s perceptions of accessible theatre. It is, to date, the only project of its kind in the country. It’s also lots of fun, with recreational events in the evenings and great accommodation in the fabulous city of York. The school’s producer, Roberta Hamond, said, On The Run is a devised show that explores the human capacity to adapt, survive and to turn trade into tricks. A group of young people are ostracised from school for being different and labelled 'naughty'. They are sent to a brat camp moving bales of paper day in and day out, not being allowed to talk or sign. They plan their escape using paper to create rope ladders and the like. They end up in the circus where they pool their resources to create their own circus acts which range from pure skill to slapstick with a healthy dose of charm and bluff! On the Run promises to be a spectacular show that will thrill the audience and also as a multicultural project will provide a training ground for adult deaf and hearing practitioners, technicians, interpreters and volunteer community workers who have an interest in mainstream and integrated theatre." Graeae Theatre Company’s artistic director Jenny Sealey directs On the Run. She said about the play,"'On the Run' promises to be a spectacular show that takes the audience on a rollercoaster ride from the mundanity of factory work to a circus with a difference. This multi cultural team of aspiring actors, stage managers, directors, interpreters and volunteers will learn to work together in a whole diversity of langauges - sign language, voice, gestural language and create whole new take on theatrical language. The summer school is now in its 9th year but the is the first time it has been hosted by York Theatre Royal. This new partnership creates a whole new world of possibilities not only because of the stage, the costume department and the production team but because York Theatre Royal has a solid reputation for its work with young people and we are excited to be part of the ethos and experience." Tickets are priced £5.00 with tickets for Under 25s and Students at £3.50. These can be purchased at the York Theatre Royal Box Office or by calling 01904 623568.
