July 4th, 1990. In Italy, England are preparing for their most important football game in 24 years- the World Cup semi-final vs. West Germany. In Majorca, Bill and Monica are on holiday trying to rekindle their troubled marriage. Featuring an all-star cast the smash-hit West-End comedy is set to be a winner when it runs at York Theatre Royal from 5-8 July at 7.30pm.
Monica dreams of an affair with Gary Lineker, the ‘Queen Mother of Football’ though in fact she has been seeing a friend of Bill’s, the travel writer, Dan Hudson. Circumstances change when Dan unexpectedly arrives at their hotel, and together, in the company of Bill’s colleague Ian and Birgitta, the local German tourist rep, they settle down to watch the game on TV. Throughout ninety minutes, extra time and the infamous penalty shoot-out, the field of battle switches between the hotel and the Italian football pitch as Monica, Bill and the England Team approach the inevitable…
An Evening with Gary Lineker’s excellent cast includes Peter Amory, who played the character everybody loved to hate- Emmerdale’s Chris Tate, Richard Driscoll (Alex, the vicar from Eastenders), Matthew Cottle (BBC’s hir comedy Game On), and York favourite, Katherine Dow Blyton (Sally Hunter in Hollyoaks). The play is written by Chris England and Arthur Smith.
“Congratulations, brilliant and well done to what is easily the funniest play in the West End and probably the funniest play in the universe”
Daily Express
