With the arrival of lighter evenings, what better way to spend your time, than at the Theatre with friends or family – and with classic comedies, dramas, great live music on offer, there's plenty to choose from.
The week will kick off no pun intended with the first-time visit from the much-loved Reduced Shakespeare Company with their latest madcap production – Completely Hollywood on the 20 & 21 June at 7.30pm. Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the theatre, the Reduced Shakespeare Company boldly goes where few would dare - Tinseltown! America's "bad boys of abridgement" take on America's largest export, as they shake up showbiz in this epic edit of movie masterpieces.
On 22 June, Jazz and blues legend, George Melly, is set to entertain with his brand of raucous singing, warm stage presence and irreverent humour that will guarantee a fabulous evening of vintage jazz and irrepressible showmanship, featuring tracks from his new and highly rated album, ‘Singing and Swinging the Blues.’
‘Singing and Swinging the Blues,’ features the combined talents of some of the cream of British Jazz. With the legendary George Melly whose singing style, particularly with the blues, is strongly influenced by his idol, Bessie Smith, on vocals, supported by Digby Fairweather (trumpet), Julian Marc Stringle (saxophone), Chris Gower (trombone), Craig Milverton (piano), Dominic Ashworth (guitars), Bobby Worth (drums) and top bass player Len Skeat (double bass) this will undoubtedly be an energetic, powerful performance to remember.
The following night York Theatre Royal is delighted to welcome one of the country’s best-loved writers and raconteurs, Sir John Mortimer, to the main stage for a wry, witty and sideways look at life in Mortimer’s Miscellany on Friday 23 June at 7.30pm.
Sir John Mortimer, barrister, playwright, creator of Rumpole, author of numerous film scripts including Cider with Rosie and blockbuster, Zeffirelli’s Tea with Mussolini starring Judi Dench and Maggie Smith- is also a masterful raconteur. Along with distinguished colleagues, Sir John presents a memorable show packed with stories, anecdotes from the legal world, poetry, music, the words of Byron, Auden, Hardy and even a few newspaper articles about bizarre real-life murders.
After their success last Autumn with Bill Maxted’s Most Excellent Adventure, Yellow Leaf Theatre Company make a welcome return to the Studio on 23 & 24 June with their latest production, Modelling Spitfires. Maurice is a little odd - but harmless, surely. He likes to build model aeroplanes. He also drops bombshells that explode long-buried secrets and turn people's lives upside down.This intriguing new drama by BAFTA nominee, Vanessa Rosenthal, will take you on an emotional loop-the-loop through a skyscape of mental illness, family feuds. and late-flowering romance.
Finally something for the children. From 20-22 June, tutti frutti join forces with York Theatre Royal for the enchanting and colourful tale of The Girl Who Lost Her Smile. When Jehan smiled by day, the sun shone brightly over the wondrous city of Baghdad. When she smiled by night the stars glittered. But one morning gloom falls over the city; Jehan has lost her smile. With the help of the wise hoopoe bird, jugglers, fire-eaters and artistes are invited from across the world to find a beauty that had always been there. This simple tale is infused with a gentle spirit and is rich in meaning. Derived from a collection of Islamic stories, tutti frutti’s imaginative and colourful production of this multicultural story with its fabulous original music will delight adults and children alike.
