Pramface is a chav in a tracksuit who keeps an obsessive secret locked in her cellar and an obsessive sense of injustice locked in her heart. When Danny Wells, the kid next door, is humiliated on TV talent show Star Search, Pramface’s anger turns to action, with horrifying consequences.
By pushing modern stereotypes to the extreme, Pramface explores our society obsessed by gossip magazines, tabloid exclusives, talent shows, cosmetic surgery and class. As Hopley says, “the show grew from my anger at words like ‘chav’ and the light-hearted irony with which they are bandied about the popular press.”
Pramface was developed at secondary schools in Liverpool and the London Borough of Southwark. The play was performed at the Gilded Balloon as part of the 2005 Edinburgh Festival where it won a British Council Plat du Jour Award.
Lizzie Hopley was born in Liverpool and trained at RADA. She was a runner up in the 2004 Verity Bargate playwriting award. Her first play, The Cenci Family, was produced for BBC Radio 4 in May 2004 and has recently been nominated for a Sony Academy Award. Her most recent acting work includes the theatre tour of Abigail’s Party and a role in the film Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason. Pramface director Sarah Chew has directed new writing, classic theatre and opera around the world. Her production of Missing Persons: Four Tragedies and Roy Keane recently opened in London’s West End. She also recently directed Colin Teevan’s The University and RealTime by Joshua Sobol in Israel, as well as directing at the National Theatre of Uganda.
“It’s a clever and at times hilarious piece and Hopley offers a mesmerising performance.”
