************************* Political, immediate and compelling, The Daughter is a contemporary reworking of Measure for Measure based on verbatim research in Palestine and Israel. It combines humour, sexuality and power relationships into a family story that explores in a human way burning questions of resistance to occupation and the vexed morality of the suicide bomber. It exposes the gaps between CNN and real lives to confront the absurdities and human costs of occupation and resistance on both sides of the divide. It’s the second part of a trilogy exploring the experience of women caught up in major social or political upheaval; here focussing on a young protagonist who tries to take direct action. Suicide bombing is perhaps the ultimate personal act in defiance of state oppression. The Daughter has been developed through improvisation, transcribed interviews and intensive workshops led by Jewish writer/director Stephen Tiller and Muslim designer Nadia Lakhani. Both from the East End of London, they are a perfect illustration of the changing face of Britain and of its refugee and immigrant population. The Company’s last show, Warcrime, a hard-hitting piece about the atrocities and morality of the Nato bombing of Serbia in 1999 had a sell-out run in the crypt of a Blitz bombed church in London and has since been presented in a cold-storage plant on the Seine, an ancient amphitheatre in Salonika, an industrial mill in Bradford, inside the North Tower of the Tyne Bridge and even in a former nuclear bomb hanger on an ex US air base. ‘an extraordinary event’ The Guardian * * * * Director Stephen Tiller comments, “We wanted to look again at the theme of women in war, but not in their customary role as unwilling victim. From the moment we stepped off the plane, our research in Israel and Palestine had a big and powerful influence on us and the piece. We hope it will shake up people’s preconceptions about the Middle East.” With Elections in Palestine, Elections in Iraq, but shooting and suicide bombs everywhere, The Daughter could not be more timely.
